Amy Smith was recently named in TIME’s annual list of 100 people who most affect our world (article here). She’s been inventing appropriate technologies for years, and founded D-Lab at MIT.

“Her machines are one of her gifts to the world; the students she trains will be an even more enduring one.”

I took two D-Lab classes and Amy was my senior design project advisor. She is the reason I am over here doing what I’m doing now.

I’m not the only one either: Daniel, Ashley, Jodie, and Becca are all a product of D-Lab. And those are just the longer-term people I’ve personally spent time with here in Africa. There are many more D-Lab alums doing short-term projects or working in other parts of the world.
