This pedal powered water pump was designed by a Tanzanian named Bernard at Global Alliance for Africa’s Vijana Centre. He managed their bike workshop, and for a good reason.

This pump uses a chain on the outside of a wheel frame to power a broken diesel pump. All it takes is a little suction to get it going, and it works like a charm. I don’t know exactly how much water it can pump and from how deep, but simply running it revealed that these numbers must be quite high and should be tested.

Unfortunately, there is only one of these pumps, and it is currently made by cutting a bike frame.

Project #2: Determine what it will take to make Bernard’s pump manufacturable on a large scale. Examine the possibility of turning it into a bicycle attachment.
